Bilge Saruhan is a Senior Scientist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, leading the research activities in the area of functional coatings at the Department of High-Temperature and Functional Coatings of DLR-Institute of Materials Research. She received her BSc and MSc from the Dept. of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and completed her PhD studies at the Materials Research Centre of the University Limerick in Ireland. Prior to the start of her PhD, she worked at the plants of Turkish Automotive Industry (TOE) as a quality control engineer. She gained her lectureship qualification (habilitation) from the Technical University of Freiberg and held lectures at the Applied Universities of Cologne and Rhein-Sieg (near Bonn) on Materials Science and Nanomaterials for Microsystem-Technology. Her research fields cover development of thermal barrier coatings, sensing materials for gas sensor devices, functional nano-structured layers and catalysts for various energy applications, electrical energy storage materials for supercapacitors and self-healing capable rechargeable Li-ion batteries. She has authored/co-authored up to date 128 papers, published 1 book and holds 10 granted patents.
